Open Position: GIS Analyst/Senior GIS Analyst
South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (SSMMA) seeks a GIS Analyst/Senior GIS Analyst to join our Planning and GIS Department. SSMMA is a non-profit Council of Governments representing 45 communities in south Cook and eastern Will counties. SSMMA is involved in transportation, housing, economic development, green infrastructure, broadband expansion and other issues important to our member communities and our region. SSMMA’s GIS Consortium strives to provide efficient, innovative and high quality GIS services to local governments in Chicago’s South Suburbs. Position Description
Performs professional duties related to planning, customizing, organizing, and maintaining the geographic information system; generates and analyzes spatial data to support a variety of agency-related projects; and produces reports, maps, and web mapping applications for member municipalities. Manages short- and long-term research, data analysis, and mapping projects. Delivers presentations highlighting the department’s work product to municipal staff, elected officials, and external stakeholders.
Examples of Duties
Analyze, develop and implement GIS projects and applications in support of SSMMA and its member municipalities; conduct analysis using ArcGIS Pro, Business Analyst, Survey123, and Carto.
Create maps and presentation materials using ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite.
Manage GIS projects and databases for SSMMA and its members; troubleshoot and resolve database problems; monitor and update database applications; and verify the integrity of data within the database.
Assist in various tasks associated with local agency inquiries, and interact with members to determine their data and GIS requirements.
Coordinate and/or perform field data collection; and, create, deploy, and maintain web-based GIS (mobile access and data collection) for Apple, Android, Trimble, and other GNSS mobile devices.
Conduct data collection fieldwork and independent research.
Create and edit geospatial data using digitizing techniques.
Organize training meetings to educate staff and members on how to operate web maps and applications.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of GIS software and applications with practical experience using Esri (including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online) and familiarity with extensions such as Business Analyst and Network Analyst. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite. Ability to interpret, analyze, and solve problems as well as communicate orally, visually (maps and exhibits), and in technical writing.
Preferred Skills & Knowledge
Familiarity with the processes of local government. Demonstrated project management and leadership experience. Exemplary public speaking and customer service skills.
Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in geographic information systems, planning, geography or a closely related field, and a minimum of two years experience working with Esri, preferably in a local government setting.
Additional Information
Salary range: $50,000 - $60,000, depending on experience.
This is a full time (35 hours/week) position with benefits.
Hybrid, flexible office schedule. Employee will be expected to work between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Approximately one day per week must be spent on-site at the Association’s offices in East Hazel Crest, Illinois.
