From the Office of Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas; please share with your communities:
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas may be able to relieve some stress for homeowners by lowering their property taxes, applying for missing exemptions which means a refund, waiving interest fees on late payments, and pushing the tax sale back indefinitely.
Cook County homeowners are missing out on: $79 million in available property tax refunds $44 million in unclaimed tax exemptions for senior citizens, veterans, and disabled persons
This money belongs to the people, not the government. All homeowners are entitled to a property tax exemption and those homeowners who are 65 or older often do not receive the senior citizen and senior freeze exemptions. They continue to pay high property taxes when they don’t have to. The Treasurer’s team is here to help.
The Treasurer’s Office will: Search for available refunds going back 20 years. Find missing exemptions going back four years. For each year of a missing exemption, a check is given.
