Southland police reach out to community in variety of ways

At The Plush Horse ice cream shop in Palos Park one balmy July morning, Larry Wiles, 67, talked about riding horses as a young boy in a nearby pasture. Katherine Cochran told the story of losing her mother and beating cancer shortly thereafter. Mike Schimanski talked about his days as an Metra electrical worker and a battle to unionize decades ago.

For a police event, there wasn’t much talk of policing.

It may seem like just pleasant chit-chat, but it’s a law enforcement strategy. The monthly meeting at the shop, called “Coffee with a Cop,” is part of the community policing program in Palos Park…Please click here to read Matt McCall’s story in the Tribune/Daily Southtown.
