Though he’d fastidiously tended the grounds at the University Golf Club and Conference Center for most of the previous 12 years, when Marty Smith returned to the course eight weeks ago, the rough was as tall as 3 feet in spots.
Still, the newly rehired course superintendent was unfazed.
“I surveyed what was here,” Smith said. “I made a quick judgment, and I told Bob (Geppert, the general manager), ‘We’re gonna shoot for Labor Day.’
