THE JOB: Under the direction of the Public Works Director assist in directing the day-to-day
operations of the department. Assigns personnel, equipment, and materials to efficiently and
effectively complete tasks. Assists in departmental planning and policy. Directly supervises Utility
Supervisor, Head Mechanic, and Crew Leaders. May serve as Acting Director of Public Works in the absence of the Director. Performs other duties as assigned.
DUTIES: Supervises and assigns the daily work schedule. Performs job site inspections of crews.
Serves as Water Operator in Charge of the water system and maintains required paperwork and
reports. Performs periodic rounds of water systems/plants throughout the Village, in order to observe charts and meters. Makes adjustments to equipment after interpreting readings from meters and other measuring devices. Regulates electric motors and pumps to adjust proper water flow and pump rates. Directs the snow and ice fighting team during snow and ice events. Receives emergency calls at all hours and takes appropriate action. Performs duties in the field as needed at all hours, in all weather conditions.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. Must have specialized training/trade school and license for C Operator Water License or greater. Minimum 5 years of Public Works experience with increasing scope and responsibility. Minimum 3 years of experience supervising in a public works environment. Must have Knowledge and operating ability of light and heavy equipment, as well as snow plows. Must have a valid Class B Commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
SKILLS: The ability to work independently without direct supervision. Must have strong organization and record-keeping skills. Must be able to work successfully in a fast paced environment with competing priorities. The proven ability to build pride, fellowship, and common loyalty, and shared purpose within the public works environment. The ability to provide customer service to the residents in a helpful, polite manner. Good verbal and written communication skills.
